About Us

Stories from the Barrio started as audio recordings of personal stories disguised as podcasts shared with my good friend in Wisconsin. I wanted to tell him personal stories with supernatural origins. Our family contains a copious amount of stories about aswang, kapre, dwende (dwarf), anito (ghoul), encanto (otherworldly spirits), and ghost stories. As I rifled through our families’ stories, I began researching stories about the Philippines and wanted to give context to the podcast besides just explaining what an aswang is. What I found out is an abundant fascinating back story of the Philippines. I loved reading about Philippine history as a child, but as I grew up, I realized that I knew so little about the land I was born in. The podcast is about the stories and folktales, while the website arms you with more information about our local folktales and history.

We also have an Instagram account dedicated to sharing books, photos, and materials I come across during my journey to finding new stories and fascinating stories about Philippine history.
